Left: Democratic candidate Cindy Polo. Right: Serial political candidate Richard Tapia.

A Florida State House candidate who donated a ton of money to Republicans and has deep roots with high ranking GOP local officials just used a live call libel attack on his opponent.

Rick Tapia just moved into Florida House district 103 covering northwest Miami-Dade and the south Broward city of Miramar, by renting an apartment during the primary qualifying period far from his homestead property near Dadeland.

Today, the Tapia campaign sunk to a new low by paying live callers to dial Democratic voters and slander his opponent Cindy Polo, who is garnering support from the House Minority leader and local Democratic clubs.

Live libel phone caller for hire in Miami political race

Today, I interviewed Kate Tobon, who is the local anti-blasting activist that started a major petition to reign in the White Rock quarry, whose commercial activities cause mini-earthquakes in her area.

Tobon has lived in House district 103 for the last five years — in Miramar — and got a live libel call, presumably from Tapia, which featured a live caller speaking Cuban-accented Spanish named “Barbara,” and came from the phone number 305–303–7042.

“‘We’re contacting all of the registered Democratic voters in your area, we want to tell you about a candidate Cindy Polo’,” Tobon said the call began. “I usually don’t take these calls, but I heard it was Cindy and thought it was about her.”

“‘She’s a candidate and she works for MDX, she is their spokesperson. Part of her platform is to increase tolls’,” Tobon told me “Barbara” intoned worriedly in the voice of an articulate, latter-middle aged Latina woman, who mixed English with Spanish.

“‘We are regular people, we go to work and have to use the toll system at least twice a day’,” said “Barbara”, “‘So if you vote for her, she’ll raise your tolls’.”

I asked for more information, where can I get this information. She made things up, and said ‘everybody knows it’.” according to Tobon.

“When I realized that there would be no specific details, I told her,”

‘“I know Cindy Polo, I’m friends with Cindy. I know that she is a stay at home mom, and that five years ago, she worked at MDX.’ “

When Kate Tobon asked “Barbara” asked who paid for her live libel call today, she got scared and hung up.

“I wish I could’ve recorded it,” sighed Kate Tobon at the end of our interview.
